Honduran President Orders Recount of 2025 Election Ballots

(MENAFN) Honduran President Xiomara Castro announced Saturday that all ballots from the 2025 presidential election will be recounted, directly contesting results certified weeks earlier.

The decision, driven by the ruling Libre party, has drawn criticism since the National Election Council (CNE) declared Nasry Asfura of the National Party — supported by US President Donald Trump — the winner on Dec. 24.

Castro explained on US social media platform X that the electoral authority refused to review more than 4,764 tally sheets allegedly riddled with irregularities, representing over 1.5 million votes.

She wrote: “This omission usurps popular sovereignty by disregarding, without legal cause, the vote of more than one million Hondurans who went to the polls. It constitutes a serious violation of the Constitution of the Republic, which I am obligated to comply with and defend until the last day of my term.”

Her order mandates the recount of more than 19,000 tally sheets, effectively nullifying the previously certified results. While no timeline was specified, Castro stated that if the CNE refuses to comply, the National Congress would assume responsibility for the process.

She further accused the electoral body of failing to resolve 292 nationwide challenges related to inconsistencies, tampered records, duplicate votes, and ballot box stuffing. Castro also highlighted that more than 500,000 votes lacked biometric verification and pointed to alleged failures and manipulations in the preliminary results system since the Nov. 30 elections.
