Despite Plenty of Hot Air, Gov. Hot Wheels Has a Flat Tire
DALLAS, TX — Uh oh! It looks like Governor Hot Wheels has gotten a flat.
By conventional wisdom, Greg Abbott should be running away with the governor’s race. He’s a three-term incumbent with an established political operation and a deep war chest powered by the wealthy and well-connected.
Yet, today we got our latest example of a candidate who’s in the political fight of his life and a campaign that’s facing its most serious challenge to date.
New polling from N+ Univision News/YouGov shows Abbott’s once double-digit lead over Gina Hinojosa has completely evaporated; they are now deadlocked in a statistical tie at 47% each with less than 60 days until the election. It’s the first time a Democratic challenger has ever tied with Abbott in public polling.
The survey also shows Abbott in trouble with Latino voters, with Hinojosa up 18 points with Latina women and 2 points with Latino men.
This is the eighth consecutive poll in recent weeks showing Hinojosa with clear, sustained momentum, closing the gap with Abbott and consistently winning over key voter groups needed for victory while Abbott struggles to maintain support with key voter groups, including some high-profile Republicans who are predicting he could lose in November.
So why is Governor Hot Wheels falling flat?
“Greg Abbott has been in public office for 30 years. He’s had decades to make life better and more affordable for hardworking Texas families. Yet, those families can feel everyday that Greg Abbott has sold them out for the billionaires and big corporations lining his pockets. They feel it at the gas pump. They feel it at the grocery store. They feel it when they can’t get healthcare. They feel it when the property tax bill arrives. And they feel it when their neighborhood school is on the verge of shutting down. That’s why he’s in the political fight of his life. Texas voters know that all Greg Abbott has to offer are solutions to problems he created that he could’ve addressed at any point in the last 30 years – and they’re ready to reject a rigged, status quo system that’s clearly not working for them,” said Texas Democratic Party Spokesman Jacob Long.
