LIBERTARIAN PARTY OF CALIFORNIA ENDORSES 'UNDO THE TOP TWO' BALLOT INITIATIVE

California voters deserve the opportunity to vote for candidates who represent their values in the General Election.”
— Loren Dean, LPC Chair
SACRAMENTO, CA, UNITED STATES, August 18, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- The Libertarian Party of California has endorsed the “Undo the Top Two” ballot initiative, which would end California’s top-two primary system and restore the ability of all recognized political parties to place their candidates on the November General Election ballot.

The Party’s Executive Committee unanimously reaffirmed its endorsement of the initiative at its August meeting. The Executive Committee had previously voted to endorse the measure before it was officially released for circulation by the California Secretary of State.

“California voters deserve the opportunity to vote for candidates who represent their values in the General Election,” said Loren Dean, Chair of the Libertarian Party of California. “The top-two system has largely eliminated third-party candidates from the November ballot and, because California also prohibits write-in votes for partisan offices in the General Election, leaves millions of voters without the opportunity to vote for a candidate who represents them.”

“California’s elections should provide voters with more choices, not fewer,” Dean said. “Undoing the top-two primary would give Californians a meaningful choice in November and allow more political parties, including the Libertarian Party, to put their candidates before the voters in the General Election. We urge all California voters to sign the petition.”

While the Libertarian Party of California supports broader electoral reforms, including ranked ballots and proportional representation, the Party believes the “Undo the Top Two” initiative would be a meaningful step toward restoring electoral choice for California voters.

The Libertarian Party of California has opposed the top-two primary system since its inception. The Party opposed Proposition 14, which established the system in 2010, and in 2024 joined the Peace and Freedom Party and the Green Party of California in a federal lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the top-two system and its impact on minor-party candidates and voters.

Founded in 1971 the Libertarian Party (LP) is America's third-largest political party. Its mission is founded on the principles of individual liberty, limited government, and free markets. The Libertarian Party of California (LPC) was officially recognized as ballot qualified in 1980.
